BMI Calculator - Free Online Calculator
The BMI Calculator helps you calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI) instantly using your height and weight. BMI is a simple screening measure recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to check whether your weight is in a healthy range for your height. Knowing your BMI is a good first step towards understanding your health and fitness. What is BMI? Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from a person's weight and height. It gives an estimate of body fat and helps classify a person as underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese. Doctors, dieticians, fitness trainers and health insurers commonly use BMI as an initial health indicator. BMI Formula BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ [Height (m)]² Since the calculator takes height in centimeters, it first divides the height by 100 to convert it into meters. Example: A person weighing 68 kg with a height of 170 cm has a BMI of 68 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) = 68 ÷ 2.89 = 23.5 How to Use the BMI Calculator? 1. Enter your weight in kilograms. 2. Enter your height in centimeters. 3. The calculator shows your BMI instantly. Compare it with the BMI chart below. BMI Chart for Adults (WHO Classification) • Below 18.5: Underweight • 18.5 to 24.9: Normal (healthy weight) • 25.0 to 29.9: Overweight • 30.0 to 34.9: Obese (Class I) • 35.0 to 39.9: Obese (Class II) • 40 and above: Severely obese (Class III) BMI for Indians and Asians Research shows that Asians, including Indians, can face higher risks of diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease at lower BMI levels. For this reason, Indian health guidelines suggest that a BMI of 18.5 to 22.9 is normal, 23 to 24.9 is overweight, and 25 or above is obese. Health Risks of a High or Low BMI • A high BMI may increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, joint problems and sleep apnea. • A low BMI may indicate malnutrition, weak immunity, anaemia, osteoporosis or other health problems. Limitations of BMI • BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat, so athletes and bodybuilders may have a high BMI while being fit. • It does not show where fat is stored. Belly fat is a bigger health risk, so waist circumference is also useful. • It is not suitable for pregnant women, and children and teenagers need age- and gender-specific BMI charts. Tips to Maintain a Healthy BMI • Eat a balanced diet with vegetables, fruits, whole grains, protein and healthy fats. • Exercise for at least 150 minutes a week, as recommended by WHO. • Sleep 7 to 8 hours a night and manage stress. • Limit sugar, processed foods and sugary drinks.
